Three strikes on the bell is the standard signal for a vessel sighted dead ahead, as per established seamanship practice. This code, while not a regulatory requirement, is a conventional method for lookouts to quickly alert the bridge to the relative bearing of a sighted object, using one strike for starboard bow, two for port bow, and three for dead ahead.
