GPS provides accurate vessel position data to GMDSS equipment. GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that supplies latitude and longitude to radios, EPIRBs, and other GMDSS units. COSPAS-SARSAT is a rescue system, EPIRBs and Inmarsat-B transmit position data received from an external GPS, and these are not primary shipboard positioning systems.
