188. What should you do prior to rolling the main turbines in preparation for getting underway?
The turning gear must be disengaged before rolling the main turbines to prevent mechanical damage and ensure free rotation. Attempting to roll the turbine with the turning gear engaged can severely damage the gear train, turbine, or turning gear itself; normal pre-start procedures do not include circulating lube oil through the emergency cooler, securing gland sealing steam, or opening reduction gear casing access plates.
