When a vessel approaches a bend and hears a prolonged blast signal, the required response is a prolonged blast, as stipulated by Navigation Rules Rule 34 regarding maneuvering and warning signals. This signal, lasting 4-6 seconds, is specifically designated for bends and obstructions in channels, and any approaching vessel within hearing must reciprocate with the same prolonged blast.
